1. Measure your space.
Take all the measurements you need to make sure the cupboards you want fit with your kitchen – you don't want to buy cabinets that don't fit!
2. Draw out your plan.
You don't have to be an architect to make a good kitchen plan. Draw out how you want your kitchen to look – does it work with the cupboards and kitchen units that you've chosen? Think about how you actually use your kitchen – does the layout work with you?
3. Choose your tools.
Make a list of the tools you need. It's always recommended that you include the essentials:
- spirit level
- stud finder
- power tools – saw, drill, screw-gun
- teabags and a kettle – for when you need a break!
4. Paint the room or install your flooring.
If you want to repaint the kitchen and replace flooring, do this before you install your new cupboards. Think about the thickness of your new flooring, especially wood or tiles and decide whether it should go under the cabinets.
5. Assemble the cupboards.
Put the cabinets together, but don't put the doors on – make sure the cupboards are assembled as securely, squarely and evenly as you can.
6. Locate and mark studs in the walls with a stud finder.
This will help with stud spacing and it's always a good idea to do a test fit before you install the cupboards.
7. Screw in the cabinets into the wall, add the doors and test fit any counter tops.
Then add any appliances removed before your refit – then enjoy your new kitchen cabinets and cupboards!
