Breakfast Bed

Breakfast in bed is a real treat. Whether it's for a partner, a deserving family member or a friend, it is guaranteed to make the receiver feel extremely special. Follow our 9 easy steps to help you create the perfect breakfast in bed for all occasions.

1. Bed trays. First things first; have you got a bed tray?  Trays, like Ikea's NORDBY bed trays, are great for carrying and displaying all your hard work.

2. Choose a menu or a theme. There are several themes to choose from, but most importantly you need to plan. Make a list of all the ingredients needed for your chosen breakfast and pop out either in the morning or the night before to purchase them. Depending on the person it's for, it might be nice to get a newspaper or perhaps a flower to place on the tray.

3. Healthy options. If it's low calories you're after, there are always great breakfast in bed options for you. Try this; orange juice, a fruit platter (depending on the season you can buy some lovely exotic fruits) and you can even put some bran or oat muffins for a little treat. The lay out and choice of fruits will make your platter a smorgasbord of colour, textures and delights.

4. Eggcellent breakfast. There are so many things to do with an egg; fried, poached, scrambled or boiled. If you want to make this breakfast in bed a real treat you could make a dish like Eggs Royale, treating someone to a visually beautiful dish and the extravagance of heavenly smoked salmon. Making your own hollandaise sauce is also a great thing for winning brownie points.

5. The Full English. The fry up is a great option for those who might have overindulged the night before, and as it's eaten early, you have the rest of the day to burn it off. There are a few varieties to this dish but the staple will always be bacon, poached or fried eggs, grilled tomatoes, fried mushrooms, sausages, beans and either fried bread or toast. Thanks to our American cousins, amendments such as hash browns and pancakes can be made.

6. Continental treats. A simple and delicious option for breakfast in bed is the continental choice. A coffee (cappuccino with heart shaped chocolate sprinkles perhaps) croissant or sweet cake with jams and butter. This can be served with orange juice and even some slices of cooked meats like salami or ham.

7. IKEA style frukost Swedish breakfast generally consists of bread with many cold cuts or cheeses. Goats cheese, caviar (if you really want to impress) hams, scrambled or boiled eggs, toast with honey or marmalade, even pate and pickles. As long as you display the items creatively, you're on to a winner.

8. Presentation. The key to perfect breakfast in bed is in the delivery. Simply throwing a tray down and muttering "here” won't be met with the smile you are looking for. Enter the room with a flourish, lay the tray gently, and allow the wonderful breakfast smells to tempt the eater, and you're sure to get the reaction you'd hoped for. Most of all, enjoy it, breakfast in bed is not something that will be forgotten in a hurry.
